This is one of my all time favorite books for parents of young readers or dyslexic students. We spend a lot of time at school teaching students how to do partner reading. But it is so important for parents to know how to read with their students. I highly recommend reading this book with your child to get to understand the basics of reading at home with your student.
You Read to Me, I’ll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together
When you read it sit with your child together. The book explains how to read it, one person reads the words on the left, one reads the words on the right and both read the words in the middle. It helps your child build confidence as they read more and more words as the book goes on.
It’s especially helpful for students with dyslexia as it helps students learn rhyming patterns. Mary Ann Hoberman has developed fun rhymes
It’s followed up by a whole series of others including Fables, Fairy Tales, Scary stories and more!
Partner Reading
Parents this is one of the best things you can do to help your child be confident in the classroom. Read along with them at home. Teachers this is a great video to share with your parents.
I love that graph in the book Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program for Reading Problems at Any Level that illustrates how many words a child will be exposed to over the year if they read for just one minute a day, 5 minutes and 20 minutes. By reading with your child for only 5 minutes a day your child will be exposed to 282,000 words!!!! Just 5 minutes a day. You can’t replace that and if you read 20 minutes a say with your child they will be exposed to 1.8 million words!!!!
I hope this inspires you to encourage your parents to read at home with their child. Remember the focus should be on easy books or books that are little bit challenging. Most of all they should be books your child is authentically interested in.
